Replacing the Bilge Rails / Rubbers

Replacing the Bilge Rails

After many seasons afloat on various moorings, Tra Bhui’s bilge rails had deteriorated to the point where they were beyond saving. After purchasing a large iroko beam new ones were cut and shaped to replicate the original ones. As with the other woodwork on the boat the new rails received a minimum of 5 coats of oil before being fitted. As Tra Bhui will not be kept on a mooring for the foreseeable future, this should prevent the new rails taking up too much water.

After removing the old rails the mounting points were cleaned and the old sealant removed. New sealant was applied before the new rails were mounted

The original rails were held on by 4 stainless steel set screws which had been cut to length by the original builders after fitting. The cutting of the original bolts had been carried out rather crudely leaving a course and jagged end. The top section of thread on a number of bolts had been damaged. These required careful repair before the nuts could be put back on.
